Only the second recorded instrument by this seventeenth century instrument maker. A green patinated
bronze garden sundial made for the latitude of approximately 50.6° North. This is the latitude of
Weymouth, Dorset, England, but this is so unlikely the error is probably due to my inability to measure
the angle correctly. It is more likely to have been made for use in London, where the latitude is 51.5° N.
It is engraved Robert Cutbush fecit and the date 1669. It also has a Latin inscription Inpublicum
designatum which I take to mean that it was intended to be used in a public place. For clarity, I have
highlighted these inscriptions in white wax.
The gnomon has a piece missing from its tip and an iron bolt is fixed near the tip. This has been done a
very long time ago and I do not know for what purpose. The hours are marked with Roman numerals
and graduated to a quarter of an hour. The size is 6.4 inches (16.2 cms) square. Condition is fair
(there is some surface marking). English dated 1669. An astonishingly rare survival. Ticket price Reserved
