The slight pinkishnes of these rare antique ships’ candlesticks is because they are
turned not from brass, but from gun-metal; the same rare hard material as cannons
were made from. Each are in two sections, a hand-chased thread on the columns
screw into the bases.
These bases are massively heavy, far more than would be necessary to keep a
candle upright. This is probably due to their use on board a ship in the same
manner that ships’ decanters have narrow necks and wide flat bases, so that the
centre of gravity is kept low.
Overall height 8 inches (20.3cms). The condition is good noting that they have a
few minor nicks. English ca.1830. Ticket Price £490. Email me here.
