Rare, antique turned boxwood nipple shield, which was used to make it more comfortable
for the mother when breast-feeding her infant, but must have been a hindrance for the child.
Treen examples are rare, as they are usually made of unmarked silver or Sheffield plate.
When boxwood is newly cut, it is a pale yellow colour, but darkens with age. This nipple
shield has turned a pleasing yellowish-brown colour, as it has been exposed to the air for
about two centuries. This change in the colour of the wood explains why many engravings
of early boxwood slide rules were hand coloured in pale yellow.
Diameter 2.15 inches (55mm). In good condition. English late 18th/early 19th century.
